Seven Bible Verses Warning About Religious Deceivers
1. Matthew 7:15
"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."
The foundational warning. They don't announce themselves as wolves — they dress like the flock, use the same language, invoke the same faith, all while preying on the very people who trust them.
2. 2 Peter 2:1-3
"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you... And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you."
"Make merchandise of you" -- turning followers into a revenue stream through fabricated words.
3. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15
"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness."
Appearing as righteousness itself while operating as its opposite. The more convincing the disguise, the more dangerous the wolf.
4. Matthew 24:24
"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."
Even the "elect" -- the genuinely faithful -- can be deceived. This is a warning about convincing people, not obviously bad ones. Great signs and wonders, dramatic testimonies, big claims.
5. Jude 1:4
"For there are certain men crept in unawares... ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness."
"Crept in unawares" -- they don't force their way in. They are invited in because they speak the right religious language first.
6. Acts 20:29-30
"For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them."
The specific goal named here: "to draw away disciples after them" -- not to God, but to themselves. Building a personal following using religious credibility as the vehicle.
7. 2 Timothy 3:13
"But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived."
The full cycle -- they deceive others while sometimes believing their own performance. The most dangerous deceivers may have started by deceiving themselves first.
The Jim Jones Pattern Applied to Victor Marx
Jones used scripture and religious authority to build blind loyalty, then exploited that loyalty financially and psychologically until it ended in catastrophe. Marx uses his "All Things Possible" ministry credentials and religious rescue mission claims to build the same kind of blind trust -- then the TRACER filings show fabricated donors, money to family, and financial irregularities exactly where 2 Peter 2:3 warns: "with feigned words make merchandise of you." The believers who trust him because he wraps himself in faith language are exactly the "elect" Matthew 24:24 warns could be deceived. Not the skeptics -- the faithful. That's what makes it dangerous, and that's what makes it biblical.
By their fruit you will recognize them.
